The recent report by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) highlights the ongoing issue of broken-down escalators and lifts in public transport stations, a problem commuters face daily. These frequent malfunctions in the KTM, LRT and MRT networks are not only inconvenient but also pose serious safety risks. Transport Minister Anthony Loke must address this issue urgently and take immediate action to resolve it.
This problem is nothing new. It has been recurring for years, particularly along the Kelana Jaya LRT line. Despite the ongoing nature of these breakdowns, there has been little progress in addressing the root causes or preventing them from happening. Minister Loke needs to take a more serious, long term approach to this issue. Regular, proactive maintenance schedules must be enforced, and maintenance companies should be held accountable for ensuring lifts and escalators are operational, especially during peak hours.
Furthermore, to tackle this problem sustainably, the government must treat station infrastructure as a core safety concern, not an afterthought. This includes allocating dedicated funds under the transport budget specifically for lift and escalator maintenance and replacements.
The breakdowns themselves are often abrupt, causing sudden jerks or complete stops, which can lead to serious injuries, particularly at busy stations like the Pasar Seni MRT LRT interchange. This is especially dangerous for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly or those with health and mobility issues. For these passengers, the lack of functioning lifts or escalators may force them to navigate stairs, making it a difficult and unsafe journey to even reach the platform. Even for able bodied individuals, the sudden movements of a malfunctioning escalator can lead to avoidable injuries.
The problem extends beyond local commuters. Tourists who rely on Malaysia's public transport systems for convenience also suffer due to the poor state of station facilities. These recurring malfunctions create a negative impression, which could discourage future tourists from using public transport and harm Malaysia’s reputation as a reliable and accessible destination.
These breakdowns not only inconvenience daily commuters, especially those travelling from outstation or using public transport as their primary means of getting to work, but also add to their stress and frustration. The added burden of faulty equipment causes delays, disrupts daily routines, and makes commuting unnecessarily difficult.
A more systematic and comprehensive solution is needed. Regular maintenance, faster repairs and improved safety protocols will help make public transport more reliable, accessible and safe for all users. Coupled with the frequent train breakdowns and track switch issues we have been facing as of late, Anthony Loke must seriously consider his priorities for the sake of a better maintained public transport efficiency.
